First Generation is a documentary photography project focused on the identity of French women of African descent born in France. Built over eight years of encounters and trust, the project combines images and testimonies to tell the personal stories of these women and explore their place within contemporary French identity.

Between African heritage and European culture, immigration and citizenship, this generation builds a bicultural identity shaped by questions of transmission, belonging, and representation. Through this work of listening, Carolina Arantes also reflects on her own experience of displacement and non-belonging between Brazil and France.

La Kabine partners with the FLASH Festival to support the exhibition’s circulation between September and November 2026.
